Fish Surveys

Fish surveys are an important part of many aquatic projects. We provide expert fish surveys for the assessment of populations and communities within freshwater and estuarine ecosystems, as well as freshwater and coastal ecosystems, as part of many aquatic projects.

Our team can plan and manage small and large-scale projects that require fish population data. This will enable further environmental assessments, water resource planning, management of non-native invasive species, and any other environmental management.

What is a Fish Survey?

Undertaking fish surveys enables the safe monitoring of fish populations in rivers, lakes, and other bodies of water. Using appropriate methods, and depending on requirements, fish age, species, abundance and density data can be collected to give a robust assessment of the fish population present.  Once complete, fish are released unharmed back into the waters they were taken, although some specimens may be kept for a longer period if there is a requirement for a detailed laboratory health assessment.

It’s essential that information is gathered ahead of any project which could potentially jeopardise the fishes’ ecological status or cause harm to their environment, with approval from the Water Framework Directive (WFD) or an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) often being required.

Fish Survey Techniques?

There are numerous different ways to undertake fish surveys. Our specialists are well versed in the various methods used within fish surveys. All projects follow the industry standards and provide specific recommendations applicable to the project.

There are various different survey techniques, such as:

  • Seine Netting

  • Redd Counting

  • eDNA Assessments

  • Electric Fishing

  • Fyke Netting

  • Hydroacoustic Surveys
